About the Artist : Deborah Williams
Deborah Williams became involved in art at an early age and has been painting professionally for over thirty five years. She works in a variety of media including oils, acrylics, watercolors, and mixed media. Deborah's favorite subject matter ranges from landscapes to seacapes and gardens. She is a painter who enjoys the dichotomy of working in both traditional and abstract nonrepresentational formats. She feels that each approach compliments the other and inspires her to try new materials and techniques.
Deborah graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, receiving degrees in art education and studio art. She has taught fine arts in the secondary schools and community colleges of North Carolina, Connecticut, and Rhode Island and has also led Plein Air workshops.
The inspiration for Deborah's paintings come from nature and her personal experience with the world around her. She has traveled extensively including sailing the east coast of the United States, camping in Alaska and above the Arctic Circle, exploring Europe and North America, and living in Italy for a year. She feels that her love of the unique spirit of each place finds its way into her work. It is that spirit which she wishes to convey to the viewer. She is especially fond of the coastal areas of North Carolina and New England, where she has spent much time painting.
Deborah has exhibited her work widely in both solo and group shows and has received awards on the regional and national levels. This past year her work was selected by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons for the cover of their Seventy Fifth Anniversary commemorative book and was featured at the anniversary meeting. Her paintings have been published as greeting cards, book covers, limited editions, and licensed for use on home furnishings. Deborah's paintings are included in private and corporate collections in Europe, Canada, and throughout the United States. "I paint because I love to paint. I love the tactile quality of the paint, the sensual smell of the paint, the pigments, and perhaps most of all, the light as it falls on the objects which the painting represents. I derive great joy and challenge from painting and feel very blessed and very lucky to be a painter.
